Job Description:
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Epigenomics, the Bioinformatics Scientist will combine expertise in programming, informatics, and biology to make independent, original contributions to the design and implementation of research studies. We seek a candidate who is enthusiastic about working in a dynamic “start-up” atmosphere similar to what might be found in the biotechnology sector, yet within a vibrant academic research University.

The incumbent will be responsible for implementing, running, customizing, and optimizing data analyses pipelines for next generation sequencing (NGS) data from epigenomic assays such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, Whole Genome Bisulphite Sequencing, and PLAC-seq. The incumbent will work with supervisors as well as with external collaborators to design and implement integrative data analyses, and prepare results for oral presentation, scientific publications, and grant applications.

In addition, the incumbent will help computational resources for the Center by contributing to server maintenance, assisting with internal sample tracking, assessing whether computational resources are sufficient to meet needs, and advising on the purchase of additional resources when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-A Bachelor's Degree in biological science, computation/programming; or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

-Thorough theoretical knowledge and independent experimental ability to perform applied bioinformatics in a molecular biology research laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

-Strong theoretical knowledge in genomics, biostatistics, and/or computational biology.

-Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.

-Proven experience generating data reports and data algorithms to generate, abstract, manipulate and analyze complex data types.

-Proven ability to research, comprehend, gather and organize information to produce clean and concise reports and presentations.

-Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

-Demonstrated experience in statistics and programming languages such as Python, Perl, and R.

-Demonstrated conceptual/theoretical experience in bioinformatics analysis. Experience analyzing NGS data.

-Enthusiasm and ability to work in a dynamic “start-up” atmosphere similar to what might be found in the biotechnology sector, yet within a vibrant academic research University.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

-PhD Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field.

-Proficiency with relational databases and programming languages used in the development of web-based database systems (e.g. SQL Server, HTML).

Additional Info:
The mission of the UCSD Center for Epigenomics is to develop a quantitative and molecular framework to study the function and regulation of the human genome, with the ultimate goal to understand the molecular basis of cancer and other human diseases. Epigenomics is at the forefront of Precision Medicine. The epigenome, a term referring to the state of DNA methylation and the covalent modifications of histone proteins in a cell, plays a central role in regulating the functional output of the genome during development.

Changes in the epigenome that result from exposure to stress, pathogenic conditions and during aging can determine the patterns of gene expression and predispose an individual to diseases. Epigenome research promises to significantly improve our understanding of the factors that drive human development and disease. The UCSD Center for Epigenomics will work with researchers on the UCSD campus and beyond to foster the application of epigenomic concepts and technologies to clinical, translational, and basic research.
