Job Description:
The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Gastroenteritis and Respiratory Virus Laboratory Branch (GRVLB), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the CDC, Atlanta, GA, to provide bioinformatics support.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Bioinformatician III will assist in and lead projects in bioinformatics and computational biology.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and maintain Norovirus and Sapovirus web-based genotyping tools
  • Assist laboratory scientists working on related projects
  • Analyze next generation sequencing data utilizing new methodologies or existing techniques
  • Collaborate on genetic analysis projects and studies with various internal and external partners (with varying levels of computational expertise) in the design and implementation of bioinformatics tools that support automation of data analysis, especially for next generation sequencing data and large data sets
  • Advise senior scientists on the application of a variety of bioinformatics analysis tools used to compare and categorize human Calicivirus (Norovirus and Sapovirus)
  • Prepare reports, charts and graphs
  • Present data at laboratory meetings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Physics, Mathematics or a field related to the responsibilities of the position

Required:

  • Experience with algorithm development
  • Experience with Perl, Python, and Bash
  • Experience with HTML, JavaScript, and Java
  • Experience with NCBI Toolbox, BLAST, and MUSCLE
  • Experience performing quality control, assembly, annotation, and analysis of data generated by next generation sequencing platforms
  • Proficiency with open source and commercially available software for bioinformatics analysis of next generation sequencing data
  • Proficiency with the use of publicly available data repositories (i.e. NCBI, EMBL, and DDBJ)
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies to effectively convey information to partners
  • Ability to work independently and yet maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects
Desirable:
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Experience with C/C++, Fortran, Pascal, Assembler, and R
  • Experience with HTML5, Canvas, SVG, and CSS
  • Experience with Web design and the development of methods for the visualization of complex data
  • Experience with MySQL
  • Experience developing web-based bioinformatics tools
  • Strong publication record in high impact scientific journals demonstrating sound theoretical and practical knowledge of bioinformatics
  • Experience performing bioinformatics analysis in a cluster computing environment
  • Experience with MS Access, BioNumerics and statistical software
Language Skills:

The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English

REQUIREMENT:
