Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Shared Resource at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst who will apply computational techniques to rapidly accelerate the pace of cancer research. The successful candidate will display excellent technical skills along with a passion for finding computational solutions to important biological questions. The Bioinformatics Shared Resource provides a collaborative, supportive, and intellectually stimulating environment within the UACC.

The main responsibility of this position is to design and implement bioinformatics analysis strategies for cancer researchers, with a focus on, but not limited to, extracting insights from multi-‘omics and next-generation sequencing data. Additionally, the successful candidate will help drive innovation in cancer computational biology by organizing workshops between biomedical researchers at the UACC and computational faculty at the University of Arizona. The candidate will provide creative input and help catalyze new collaborative projects that use state-of-the-art informatics methods to address fundamental problems in cancer research.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Meet with research scientists to provide bioinformatics consultation in the analysis of experimental and publicly available datasets.
  • Communicate with research scientists to understand and obtain data analysis specifications.
  • Design data analysis project plans and estimate time to completion.
  • Work independently and as a team member to analyze data, developing software tools and analytical pipelines where necessary.
  • Provide publication quality documentations at the end of each data analysis project.
  • Evaluation, development, and support of new bioinformatics methods.
  • Lead bioinformatics workshops and create interactive web applications to help cancer biologists visualize and understand high-throughput data.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MS or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science and/or the life sciences and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in programming in R, Python, Java, or C/C++.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with quantitative analysis of Exome/RNA-seq or other ‘omics data and experience working with genomic databases like TCGA, ENCODE, and CCLE/GDSC is preferred.
