Job Description:
Stanford University Department of Genetics has an excellent opportunity available for three motivated Bioinformatics Specialists. This individual will work as part of the Saccharomyces Genome Database (https://www.yeastgenome.org/) and related projects funded by the National Institutes of Health. These projects are essential for advancing our understanding of model organism genomes and their use in determining the genetics of how human diseases develop and progress.

The duties include creating custom scripts and implementing existing third-party tools to retrieve, analyze, and process large data sets and metadata for integration into database maintained by the projects. Familiarity with scripting languages, quality control of data, and biological data modeling is desired. This individual will be an essential project member who must be able to learn and work independently, yet collaborate effectively with co-workers. Previous experience working in an academic environment is a plus. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with the engineering and scientific staff in the specification, design, and implementation of processing and analysis pipelines. The work will take place in a dynamic environment where specifications often change rapidly in response to user demand, so the flexibility and adaptability are key. The successful candidate will work at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Compliance with all institutional and governmental health and safety regulations and policies is required.

Duties include:

  • Collect, manage and clean datasets.
  • Create databases and reports, develop algorithms and statistical models, and perform statistical analyses appropriate to data and reporting requirements.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and determine root cause for data problems from input errors or inadequate field edits, and suggest possible solutions.
  • Collaborate with faculty and research staff on data collection and analysis methods.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficient programmer in Python.
  • Experience with modern source code version control systems (git).
  • Advanced degree (M.S.) in Biology, Genetics, or Bioinformatics.
  • Familiarity with public scientific resources and projects, such as model organism databases, GEO, NCBI, EBI, Gene Ontology, GMOD, NCBO.
  • Familiarity with RESTful services.
  • Familiarity with JSON, HTML/XML.
  • Technical expertise in comparative genomics, genetics, molecular biology, high-throughput genomic and proteomics experiments and their analysis.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Sitting in place at computer for long periods of time with extensive keyboarding/dexterity.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely writing by hand.
