Job Description:
This position will further develop the Computational Life Science platform in Trait Research: assisting in the search for pesticidal bacteria, mining and improving their active genes, and creating best-in-class traits for pest and weed control. This research encompasses many areas of statistics and bioinformatics, but one particular area of expertise required for this position is structural and molecular biology. This position also requires the ability to own and drive transformational research and as well as passion for solving difficult problems.

The primary responsibilities of this role, Computational Biology Scientist I, are to:

-Search our large data set to find genes in classes with known pesticidal activity and to discover novel pesticidal gene classes.

-Predict minimum gene sets that are required to recapitulate strain activity through heterologous expression and subsequent feeding assays.

-Work in collaboration with biochemists to prioritize strains for activity guided fractionation based on genome sequences.

-Interpret basic biochemistry literature relating to gene function.

-Develop or implement text-mining applications to assist in prioritizing candidate pesticidal genes for testing through heterologous expression and feeding assays.

Who you are:

Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE values. More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

-Ph.D. with minimum years’ relevant experience, MS with minimum of (2) two years’ relevant experience, or BS with minimum of (5) five years’ relevant experience in bioinformatics, statistics, microbiology, genetics or a related field.

-Strong mastery of a subset of bioinformatics, machine learning or statistics skills.

-Experience in cloud and/or grid-based computational environments. -Ability to handle large data sets efficiently using cutting edge platforms and tools, e.g. Apache Spark or Python MLlib.

-Extensive knowledge of at least one scripting language, e.g. Python, Perl, etc., and of relational databases.

-Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and the ability to adapt to the atmosphere of a dynamic research organization.

-Experiences in the following areas: comparative genomics, structural and molecular bioinformatics, machine learning, and statistical design of experiments.
