Job Description:
The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, based in Farmington, CT is seeking a Computational Scientist to join the Computational Sciences – Statistics & Analytics (CS-SA) group. This position offers opportunities to make leading contributions to cutting edge research and operations in disease genomics and translational research in collaboration with the faculty and the clients of The Jackson Laboratory. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged.

Characteristic distinction from junior to senior position levels includes an increased ability to work independently, and the development of in-depth knowledge in selected biological disciplines to analyze and provide expert reasoning to the relevant projects. Full-level scientists are expected to independently establish collaborations within JAX, provide expert reasoning to the projects relevant to their disciplines, and contribute to grant writing in conjunction with the researchers at The JAX. Senior-level scientists are expected to lead the collaborations, develop collaborative programs, to be a lead investigator in the grant applications and secure funding, and mentor junior scientists in consultation with the Director of the CS.

Key Responsibilities:

The Computational Scientist will have the primary responsibility of providing sequencing analytics and data interpretation to scientific research programs at The Jackson Laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Application Scientist: PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics or any relevant area; Candidates who are near the completion of their PhD can also apply; In lieu of PhD, candidates with significant experience will also be considered
  • Assistant/Associate/Full/Senior Scientist: PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics or any relevant area; Candidates who are near the completion of their PhD can also apply
  • Associate/Full/Senior Scientist: In addition to PhD, substantial experience in bioinformatics research is required
  • Senior Scientist: Demonstrated ability to establish research and mentoring leadership in addition to lead obtaining grant funds to support group members
  • Proven track record of working in a dynamic, high-performing research team environment
  • Demonstrated aptitude and capacity to work in highly-demanding research and genomics operations
  • Must be a creative contributor and be eager to learn new technologies and science
Required Skills:
  • Experience in High Throughput Sequence (HTS) data analysis, development of sequence analysis tools (bioinformatics programming) & pipelines, evaluation of analytical tools and technologies, and delivering training to the research community
  • Proficiency in Unix/Bash, Python, Perl, R or similar preferred
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools and databases (GATK, TCGA, UCSC Genome Browser, IGV etc.) is required
  • Experience in experimental design, data integration, algorithm development is a plus
  • Familiarity with evolutionary biology, genomic structural variations and clinical genomics is a plus
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills including skills necessary to present at conferences and workshops, write study designs, and analytical methods
