Job Description:
The Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Junior Specialist in Environmental Microbiology, under the direction of Professor Chad Saltikov. The candidate will contribute to research on subsurface microbial processes affecting the quality of groundwater during aquifer recharge.

The successful candidate will be expected to: implement nucleic acid extraction procedures for environmental samples; conduct PCR for taxonomical and function genes (e.g. nitrogen cycling); prepare nucleic acid samples for next-generation sequencing; maintain DNA sequencing data; culture bacteria; and assist in field sample collection. The position will require the selected candidate to successfully analyze and implement protocols; work accurately and efficiently; exercise flexibility and good judgment; and employ excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and a willingness to work with diverse groups of faculty, staff, researchers, and students are essential. We have a preference for candidates with expertise in microbiology and/or environmental genomics.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in biology, microbiology, environmental science, bioinformatics or related field, and at least one year of molecular biology or microbiology laboratory research experience including nucleic acid isolation, DNA sequencing, recombinant DNA/PCR techniques, and sterile technique.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with environmental sample collection for extraction of nucleic acids (environmental DNA and/or RNA); PCR primer design; writing scientific reports for publication; familiarity with Python, QIIME, and DNA sequencing protocols next-generation sequencing platforms (e.g. Illumina MiSeq);

RANK: Junior Specialist

SALARY: Minimum salary $37,548, commensurate with experience.

POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible after closing date.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for one year (full-time preferred, but part-time available), with potential reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
