Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division has an exciting opportunity for a Project Scientist with cross-disciplinary skills in software development and X-ray crystallography. The next decade of structural biology at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will include groundbreaking advances in time domain crystallography, diffuse scattering to observe dynamic motion, and single particle diffraction. Considering the anticipated petabyte scale of these datasets, we are undertaking an ambitious DOE-funded collaboration between the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Berkeley Lab to port data to Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) for near real-time analysis.

Specific Responsibilities:

-Lead on developing and testing software for X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) crystallography, using our previously developed packages (DIALS and cctbx.xfel) as a starting point.

-Develop a deep understanding of the hardware available for Exascale computing (including Knights Landing compute cores and burst-buffer availability), so code can be refactored for massively parallel execution.

-Work at the interface between supercomputer design teams, computer science groups, LCLS beamline scientists, and X-ray crystallography user groups.

-Derive new algorithms to adapt to heterogeneous experimental designs.

-Deliver new features on time in support of structural biology.

-Write two first-author publications per year in scientific publications.

-Present at conferences, and continuously communicate results to several collaborating groups.

Required Qualifications:

-PhD in Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or Physical Sciences, with at least 3 years of professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

-Expertise with modern object-oriented, version-controlled software development, with a team-oriented (Agile) approach.

-Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems with only broad supervision, develop strategies to solve specific problems, while running appropriate controls to validate the correct results.

-Excellent oral and written communication skills.

-Proven ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
