Job Description:
An hourly research scientist position within the broad area of metagenomics/microbiomes biology of non-human subjects is available in the laboratory of Dr. Maria C. Rivera, VCU Department of Biology.

The selected candidate will be primarily working on research projects related to non-human microbiomes. The primary role is in the bioinformatics/computational aspects of the projects, with the ultimate goal of inferring biologically relevant hypotheses regarding host/microbiome interactions. Also the candidate will participate in the collection and processing of metagenomic samples.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates should hold a master’s degree in bioinformatics or biology, preferably applied to the collection and/or analysis of molecular sequence data from non-humans subjects. The candidate must have strong computational skills and experience with all the aspects of molecular sequence data collection, Unix/Linux command line environments, R programming, Java programing and Python or a comparable scripting language. Candidates must have academic training (or) experience with the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data, including the application of the theory and methodology of population genetics, and phylogenetic reconstruction to NGS data. Experience or training in RADseq will be a plus. The applicant must be a good communicator and strong in written as well as spoken English.
