Job Description:
Under the guidance and mentorship of a Senior Scientist, the bioinformatics intern will assist in establishing a Next Gen RNA-Seq based characterization of Pfenex bacterial strains designed for therapeutic protein production. Project scope will include: designing experiments focused on analyzing global gene expression changes in bacterial cell populations in response to different growth conditions; analyzing and interpreting large differential gene expression datasets (as generated by an outsourced lab); cataloging the levels of transcripts identified and mapping gene expression results to metabolic pathways. The intern will summarize the work in a report and present significant findings to an internal scientific audience.

Work Hours:

This paid, part-time position requires a commitment of 20 hrs per week (days/times flexible)

Job Skills, Abilities And Qualifications:

This internship is intended for graduate-level students holding a bachelor's degree in biological science, computer science, or mathematics. Moderate-level skill in any modern programming language (e.g., Python, Perl, Java, C/C++, R, SAS, MATLAB, etc.) is required. Direct experience in Next-Gen sequencing and statistical modeling is preferable. The position will require strong oral and written communication skills, proficiency Microsoft Word and Excel and, most importantly, enthusiasm and curiosity for biological and life sciences.
