Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced post-doctoral fellow with a strong interest in data science and "big data" to join the Birney research group at EMBL-EBI and the Department of Medicine for the Elderly in Addenbrooke's Hospital for an exciting translational bioinformatics position in Geriatric Medicine and Health Services Research in collaboration with the Clinical School in Cambridge University.

Qualifications and Experience:

There is a need to understand the characteristics, trajectories and outcomes of older people in the acute hospital in order to help refine existing care pathways. Additionally, there is a strong interest in building predictive models tailored to individuals that may help personalise treatment, care plans and enhance patient safety.

The post holder needs to hold a PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related fields and have demonstrable skills in data science and the analysis of large data sets. You should have solid experience working with complex data, have a good knowledge of current machine learning, data visualisation and pattern recognition techniques, as well as being skilled in developing software in a Unix-based environment.

The successful applicant will hold a non-clinical honorary contract with the Department of Medicine for the Elderly and will be required to interact with clinical collaborators, presenting results and discussing ideas so good interpersonal skills are required. Knowledge of database design and implementation is not required but would be considered as an advantage. Previous experience in health care will be an asset.
