Job Description:
Full Time, fixed-term post, initially for one year, with probationary review, and the possibility of extension for up to a further 3.5 years. This post is funded by a BBSRC Bioinformatics and Biological Resources Grant entitled “Bioinformatics Resources for Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy and Structural Biology: Operation, Enhancement, Curation, and Developments”.

This is a Postdoctoral–level position in bioinformatics, undertaking development, creation, and curation of software and websites/webservers and databases, producing new structural biology analysis methods, software, and online tools/computer programs, and undertaking user liaison functions via electronic and in-person methods. The postholder will be primarily responsible for the execution of, design, curation, maintenance functions (including maintaining version control), and day-to-day operation of the PCDDB (Protein Circular Dichroism Data Bank), as well for the DichroWeb and DichroMatch analysis servers. In addition, they will be expected to be the primary contributor to the development of new analysis algorithms for novel spectroscopic/structural biology methodologies.

The minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • A PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, structural biology, or biophysics.
  • Excellent computing skills, including familiarity with a range of computing languages; ability to write in JAVA, Perl, Python, C, C++, and/or at least one other modern upper level programming language is required.
  • Expertise in creation, curation, and use of databases and associated search tools for structural biology/spectroscopy, including authoring clear and well documented software and websites for use by external users.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics techniques and creation and maintenance of relational data bases for scientific data.
  • Knowledge of structural biology, especially protein and nucleic acid structures, and software for their display and analyses.
  • Evidence of ability to effectively communicate complex information to expert and non-expert scientific audiences, students, colleagues, and funding bodies in publications, reports, and oral presentations.
  • This post holder will need to travel in the UK and internationally to participate in meetings, workshops, conferences and user liasion meetings, as well participate in external networking and collaboration with our partnering team at Queen Mary University of London.
In addition it is highly desirable that candidates have:
  • Basic knowledge of biological spectroscopy and methods of analysis (preferably Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy)
  • One or more first-author academic publications in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals.
