Job Description:
The Chang Lab is seeking a Research Assistant I to join the group at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. The successful applicant will be part of a team of scientists working to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the metabolic regulation of immune cells, such as T cells. Our group applies molecular, biochemical, and cellular immunology techniques to comprehensively characterize metabolic events of cells from both mouse and human in order to regulate the effect function of the cells against tumors. We are seeking to reveal novel strategies for cancer immunotherapy.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual who can communicate effectively, work well in a team setting and has a strong desire to learn new methods. The incumbent performs general laboratory routine procedures such as laboratory maintenance, mouse colony husbandry and genotyping, samples collection, molecular biology and biochemistry (e.g. PCR, western blotting, RNA analyses), mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry and metabolic profile analysis. The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in a dynamic research environment in an exciting fast-paced field of research. Your work will be central to several major research projects, and professional advancement and co-authorship on high-impact publications is strongly supported.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts tests, experiments, and/or procedures following standard or detailed protocol; identifies and documents variations that may affect the validity of the experiment.
  • Data collection and analysis. Performs quality control, monitors data for accuracy, uploads data to database system within agreed upon timelines with supervisor.
  • Validates and conducts studies based upon standard experimental protocols within the agreed upon timelines with supervisor. Ensures functionality and maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Schedule coordination, experimental plan; developing and documenting methodology; and assists in the preparation of publications and reports.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holiday) based on experimental requirements.
Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, bioinformatics or a related field or 3 years of related experience.
  • 1+ years of undergraduate or other research experience in a laboratory setting is a plus.
  • Proficient with molecular biology and/or biochemical techniques is preferred, but not necessary.
  • High level of initiative and motivation; ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project.
  • Ability to think outside the box to solve problems.
  • Excellent writing, communication, organization, and time management skills
