Job Description:
The University of Washington Medical Center has an opportunity for an outstanding, full-time RESEARCH SCIENTIST/ENGINEER 1. The person in this role will perform analysis and development work in a state-of-the art research and clinical laboratory. Responsibilities include generating high throughput sequencing libraries and sequencing data, DNA extraction, performing cell culture maintenance and cell culture manipulation, basic molecular biology functions, placing and receiving orders for the lab, and maintaining lab stocks and the general lab environment. This individual will be expected to attend and participate in lab meetings.

Primary Job Functions:

-Support development and evaluation of next-generation sequencing methods for implementation in research and clinical assays using the following techniques: shotgun library preparation, Illumina sequencing, PCR, DNA extraction and other standard molecular biology assays.

-Learn new skills, protocols, and tools relevant to our evolving projects.

-Document laboratory workflows and standard operating procedures.

-Place and receive orders for the lab.

-Maintain mammalian cell cultures.

-Inventory chemicals, reagents and laboratory supplies; prepare chemicals and reagents for assays, maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments; and operate ancillary equipment such as computers, printers, etc.

-Maintain the laboratory freezer logs and other records.

-Perform related duties as required.

-Attend and participate in lab meetings.

A background in biology or medicine is not required for this position and there will be ample opportunities for on-the-job training. REQUIREMENTS:

-Bachelor Degree in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Biology, Computational Biology or other quantitative scientific discipline, or equivalent combination of practical work or research experience (2-4 years).

-At least one year’s practical work or research experience.

-Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques and protocols (PCR, bacterial transformation, digests, DNA sequencing).

-Ability to collaborate with multiple groups and to work efficiently on multiple projects.

-Excellent spoken and written communication skills.

-Strong desire to author and publish scientific manuscripts.

DESIRED:

-Experience with command line programming and command line computing in a Linux/Unix environment.

-Experience using pipettors, PCR instruments, and other molecular biology instruments.

-Ability to accurately pipette and perform general laboratory procedures.

-Ability to assist in recognizing and troubleshooting instrumentation and method problems.

-Understand QC parameters, including mathematical concepts of mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation.

-Ability to use Excel and Word for data entry and data analyses.

-Ability to follow strict database management protocols.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

-Work in a sitting position 75% of the time.

-May work some weekends and holidays (only under extraordinary circumstances).

-Extensive use of computer.

-It may be necessary to work in other Department of Laboratory Medicine locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC,HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UWMC-Roosevelt, etc.

-Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
