Job Description:
PURPOSE: Interact directly with clients on topics ranging from transfer of data, interpretation of analysis results, and consultation on current and future projects. Provide support and technical expertise to develop and maintain programs to meet internal and external clients’ requests. Implement project related solutions to the full scope of scientific and/or bioinformatic programming tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Process and deliver large amounts of NGS data using a mix of open-source and custom built tools.
  • Provide expertise to internal and external clients and offer solutions to project needs.
  • Assist in the evaluation of computational efficiency of large-scale scientific and genomic sequencing computing systems.
  • Identify scientific system software components in need of improvement or replacement.
  • Maintain software infrastructure to support large-scale scientific genomic sequencing computing projects.
  • Inform system administrators of hardware maintenance and support needs.
  • Develop programming documentation including plans and specifications, in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Develop, implement, and validate new product technologies and applications.
  • May be required to understand budget and quote assumptions.
  • May be required to produce Statements of Work, in collaboration with colleagues, for custom deliverables.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Foundational knowledge in Linux/UNIX-based systems as well as HW-SW interfaces, storage, networking
  • Navigate Linux environment using the command line and familiarity with general command line tools
  • Working knowledge of computing languages. One or multiple of the following are strongly preferred: C/C++, Perl, Python, shell scripting within Bash or similar general purpose programming or scripting languages
  • Working knowledge of SQL databases (e.g. SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL) is preferred
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks and projects
  • Ability to communicate complex computational outputs to non-technical clients
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and clients
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree or educational equivalent in computer science, statistics, biology or related field and 1 year relevant experience or Masters degree or educational equivalent in computer science, statistics, genetics/molecular biology, bioinformatics or related field; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Extensive use of keyboard requiring repetitive motion of fingers
  • Regular sitting for extended periods of time
  • Occasional travel
