Job Description:
A critical role within the Global Science team is a Sr. Scientist (Peanut) to lead research initiatives which increase the foundational understanding of peanut science as it relates to areas such genetics and breeding methodologies, identification of key genetic markers for desired agronomic and consumer traits. Also, to deliver against projects which ensure a secure and flexible supply of key ingredients, such as peanut, mint and other strategic raw materials. The Sr. Peanut Scientist is expected to have a high level of technical skills in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and breeding, and be able to demonstrate a high level of learning agility. The individual will share knowledge and insights with the business and partner with suppliers, universities and research consortia to strengthen Mars Wrigley Confectionery’s global position in plant science arena.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development and application of a variety of bioinformatic techniques to assist with the molecular and phenotypic data analysis generated in the peanuts and mint genomics and breeding programs.
  • Initiates new projects, assigns priority reflecting the business goals and secures resources internally and externally, on a local and global level, maximizing the availability of the required skills and competencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and bioinformatic skills to develop and implement pipelines for acquiring and assembling genomic data, to compare whole genome sequences and to analyze gene expression data.
  • Develop collaborations with external partners to develop or validate new analytical approaches when needed.
  • Proficient in computer languages, create and maintain databases for the genetics and sustainability projects.
  • Interact with multidisciplinary teams, due to the multidisciplinary nature of the cacao and peanuts breeding and genomics programs.
  • Delivers breakthroughs as well as continuous improvement through the evolution of bioinformatics research portfolios for Mars Wrigley Confectionery. This is done by developing new ideas in this area and by identifying research objectives in both the short, medium and long term projects.
  • Enhances technical credentials to create an interface with the outside world to publicize the peanut and mint science credentials of Mars Wrigley Confectionery.
  • Is recognized globally as a leading expert in bioinformatics and acts as a consultant within Mars Inc. to share the knowledge to build and develop the community.
  • Demonstrates visible leadership in defining the skills and competencies needed in the area of bioinformatic sciences and increases the capability of the organization by recruitment and development of talented associates.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to the R&D population actively promoting best practices of scientific thinking and methodologies while helping Science team associates to appreciate the key importance of knowledge, logic and systematic approach to all they do in their own product and/or process development areas of work.
Scope:

Leads the bioinformatics lab and provides bioinformatics support to the Peanuts Genome Project, Mint Genome and other potential Global Platform projects in the area of bioinformatics. Design/development of analytical methods/experimental protocols in the area of bioinformatics as required for research purposes and performs a wide variety of genomic and genetic data analysis.

Qualifications

Education/ Training

Minimum: MSc in Genetics, Bioinformatician or other related advanced technical science discipline required with 8+ years of relevant industry experience Preferred: PhD in Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, or related discipline with 3+ years of relevant experience

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Required statistical background and experience programming in C/C++, Perl or Python and Unix experience
  • Required proficiency with creation and use of web databases including genome browsers
  • Experienced in with bioinformatic software (i.e., PLINK, BLAST, SAMtools)
  • Knowledge of high-throughput genomics technologies or experience analyzing large genomic datasets
  • Familiarity with cloud computing (Amazon AWS)
  • Strong problem solving and organization skills
  • Solid interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
