Job Description:
The Senior Bioinformatician will take a lead role as the primary bioinformatics and scientific resource to support project work that solves complex problems. Works at a high technical level in all phases of data management and bioinformatics support activities. Highly complex data will be analyzed by applying sound statistical and commonly accepted bioinformatics methods on a collaborative project team. Ensures projects are managed in a timely and efficient manner and are appropriately documented. Work will be done with an interdisciplinary team and will engage with the bioinformatics community at large on pipeline development.

The focus will be on hands-on scientific, technical activities for a wide range of high-throughput genomic technologies spanning pipeline development, optimization, automation, operations, and user support. Responsibilities will include developing and implementing software methodologies and computational tools. Will make business recommendations based on best practices, industry trends and new technologies. Execute best practices to prototype, develop, test, and roll out production quality solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply state-of-the-art computational biology and bioinformatics methods and tools to generate new or validate existing testable hypotheses from complex and large biological datasets
  • Lead the analysis of data resulting in a better understanding of human genetic variation and the association of medical information to uncover gene-disease links and new targets
  • Work effectively with the faculty, clinicians, researchers and experimentalists, to implement novel or adapt existing approaches to optimize upstream and downstream analysis and interpretation of biological data
  • Integrate diverse and heterogeneous datasets, to facilitate mining statistical analysis and visualizations leading to a better understanding of disease mechanisms, and the correlation between phenotype and genotype in different research projects
  • Instruct others in the selection and use of bioinformatics tools
  • Lead the development of new software applications or the customization ofexisting applications to meet specific scientific project needs
  • Identify suitable datasets and methods to answer particular research questions
  • Design and perform formal evaluation of informatics methods and products
  • Perform data analyst functions that generate knowledge via data mining, visualization, or other analytics
  • Lead and conduct validation and user acceptance testing
  • Create novel computational approaches
  • Design best research and development practice
  • Stay up to date on new advances and developments in bioinformatics and provide on-demand bioinformatics and statistics support to various teams
Competencies:
  • Advanced knowledge of research techniques or methods required.
  • Ability to train others required.
  • Knowledge in the development, optimization, automation, and operations support of analysis pipelines for high dimensional data including whole-genome, whole-exome, and RNA sequencing data preferred.
  • Ability to employ high performance computing to solve parallelizable computer problems preferred.

Additional Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field preferred, and five years of relevant experience required; OR
  • Master's degree required, in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field preferred, and three years of relevant experience required; OR
  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field required.
Experience:
  • Minimum of one year of experience in the field of bioinformatics
  • Minimum of one year of experience in programming for bioinformatics with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, R, Java, XML, C/C++ or SQL
  • Experience organizing and working with big data
  • Experience with next generation sequencing technologies such as BWA, Novoalign, STAR, GATK, samtools, Picard or other tools
  • Experience and proficiency in analysis pipeline development of high throughput data
