Job Description:
Looking for a fast-paced role to accelerate your development of critical leadership competencies? Microsoft Research New England is looking for you! Program management within Microsoft Research draws on a blend of skills in product management, project management, technology horizon scanning, communicating, influencing and other “soft skills.”

We seek an individual with demonstrated capability in a subset of these skills, who wants to deepen and broaden their skill set in preparation for assuming leadership roles. The role is located in the Microsoft Research New England lab in Cambridge, MA, and includes work with Microsoft Research labs in New York City and Montreal. The individual will report to the labs’ Technical Advisor and Director of Strategy, Sharon Gillett.

Responsibilities:

  • Product Management: Facilitate successful interactions between the labs and Microsoft product teams. Contribute to framing of emerging projects based on understanding of the labs’ research capabilities and how they fit with the needs of Microsoft product teams and/or external customers.
  • Project Management: Contribute project tracking, coordination and communications skills to projects across the three labs. Projects are efforts based in the labs’ research that are typically larger in scope than individual researchers and often involve developers and/or data scientists. They may feature a team of researchers working towards a larger goal, in-depth interactions with Microsoft product teams or high-visibility external partnerships.
  • Communicating Research: Keep finger on the pulse of research work streams in process across New England, New York and Montreal labs. Identify and communicate significant developments appropriate for executive visibility and external publicity, including selected speaking opportunities for the Technical Fellow and Managing Director of the three labs, Jennifer Chayes. Proactively coordinate with media relations and other communications groups within AI&R.
  • Influencing: Provide input to effective communications for the labs’ Technical Fellow and Managing Director. Audiences for these communications include high-level executives and researchers, both internal and external to Microsoft.
Basic Qualifications:
  • BS or BA in a technical discipline (including but not limited to computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, biology or other natural or life science).
  • A minimum of five years of work experience and/or post-bachelors academic experience.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communications about technical topics, such as decks, blogs, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to create effective relationships, influence and collaborate.
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail with analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of business processes and challenges.
  • Robust appetite to learn.
  • Must have the ability to travel up to 25%, including domestically and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical background relevant to one or more of the research areas covered by the New England, New York and Montreal Labs. Major research topics covered across the three labs include machine learning (including reinforcement learning, deep learning and language-based AI), economics and algorithmic game theory, social science (including both qualitative and computational approaches to the social aspects of technology), theoretical computer science, cryptography and computational biology.
  • Exposure to and/or developing capability in executive communications.
  • Master’s degree, for example in technical discipline or MBA.
