Job Description:
HJF is seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst to assist scientists and Principle Investigator (PI) in developing an independent line of research in bioinformatics, particularly in genomics and metagenomics, at the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) in Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Frederick, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to BDRD. The BS consults with scientists and PI and develops algorithms for processing, analyzing, and visualizing genomic information or other biological information. The BS packages in-house algorithms into pipelines, benchmarks them, releases them to be freely available for scientific community use, and updates them as needed. The BS builds hardware-based bioinformatics solutions, deploys software and hardware solutions in austere environments (including overseas laboratories) and then works as part of a team to provide remote user-support when necessary. Finally, the BS also analyzes high-throughput biological data, presents research data at scientific conferences; writes manuscripts to be published in peer-reviewed journals; keeps abreast of scientific literature; and prepares grant proposals with PI and scientists.

Responsibilities:

1. Manipulates and analyzes large biological datasets from in-house Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq500, Ion S5, 454); in-house microarray platforms (Agilent); publicly accessible databases; or external collaborations.

2. Uses freely available bioinformatics tools as well as develops new software applications to solve recurrently appearing problems in the “-omics” fields of research, including Genomics, transcriptomics, and Next generation Sequencing.

3. Implements new algorithms and mathematical models to solve problems in Genomics and NGS and benchmarks them using test datasets.

4. Packages in-house bioinformatics pipelines, builds and deploys hardware-based bioinformatics solutions as part of a collaborative team, develops user guide/manuals, releases them publicly (e.g. SourceForge.net), and updates them according to user feedback or database changes. Assists in user-support.

5. Summarizes research data, prepares posters, and/or presents results via conference presentations, scientific publications, or project reports.

6. Assists PI and scientists in writing grant support to novel lines of research in Bioinformatics.

7. Assists junior Bioinformatics Analysts and Laboratory Research Associates as needs arise.

8. Attends international, national, and internal meetings and teleconferences.

9. Maintains a safe work environment with appropriate training of other personnel.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong background in Computer Science, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Must have programming skills in languages such as JAVA, PERL, PYTHON, and statistical software such as R. Familiarity with next generation sequencing and related platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq500, Ion S5, 454, Optical Mapping) as well as microarrays. Must be willing to travel internationally to potentially austere environments. Must have excellent verbal and writing communications skills. Must be able to think independently and must have excellent problem-solving skills. Must be able to perform under deadlines and in austere environments.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: MS in Bioinformatics (M.Bin.) or Computational Biology.

Minimum Experience: 5 years of hands-on experience in Bioinformatics.

Physical Capabilities: Must be able to sit extensive hours and be able to lift 50 lbs. without assistance.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May need to guide Bioinformatics Analysts, Research Assistants, and as projects arise
