Job Description:
Major/Essential Duties of Job:

-Conduct research related to bioinformatics. This will include leading genomic and small RNA pathway studies in the area of virus-vector interaction. This will involve, at a minimum, analysis of sequence data and development of algorithms, statistical methods and/or scientific software.

-Manage next generation sequencing (NGS) projects. This will include providing general oversight of laboratory personnel conducting bioinformatics research, including teaching and training laboratory employees and students in the analysis of NGS data, as well as the use of programming languages such as Python or Perl and/or statistical analysis packages such as R.

-Write reports and articles for publication in refereed journals, for grantors; prepare, write and submit grant proposals for external funding to relevant agencies and companies; oversee and coordinate all research proposals including preparation of text documents, monitoring progress and timely submission, supervision and coordination of laboratory publications including instruction manuals, laboratory manuals, inventory databases, texts, and reports.

-Other duties as required.

Required Education:

Ph.D. in Virology, Microbiology, Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science or closely related field.

Required Experience:

Some demonstrated experience with bioinformatic and statistical software for the analysis of sequencing data, as evidenced with prior publications in reputable scientific journals.

Preferred Experience:

Demonstrated proficiency with a programming language such as Python or Perl and/or statistical analysis packages such as R, as evidenced with prior publications in reputable scientific journals; and practical experience conducting biological research and managing laboratory personnel.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively use personal computer to communicate, prepare proposals to include cost information on spread sheet as applicable and provide reports of activities; ability to effectively communicate with faculty, students and staff; familiarity with appropriate laboratory, farm and/or technical equipment; and ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Knowledge of standard microbiological practices and commonly used molecular biology methods; and familiar with bioinformatic and statistical software for the analysis of next generation sequencing data.
