Job Description:
Reporting to the Faculty Chair of Research Computing, the Research Computing Analyst will play a critical role towards supporting bioinformatics research across the University. The analyst supports a shared, faculty-federated research computing environment, including interconnects, networking, file systems and storage, Linux and Windows server environments, schedulers, application software, and advanced hypervisors. The role ensures the usability, availability and reliability of this computational and storage infrastructure by performing systems, administrative and maintenance tasks, fulfilling user requests, resolving incidents and outages, providing user training, maintaining documentation, working with vendors for evaluations, replacement, upgrades of various parts used in HPC clusters and participating in the development of complex computing systems.

This is a highly self-directed role with the freedom to experiment and recommend cutting-edge solutions for research. The candidate works in close collaboration with faculty and researchers to ensure current and future needs are met including leading hands-on bioinformatics workshops for new and inexperienced Linux users. The candidate will have a passion for research with exhibiting a fearless attitude for learning new applications.

Please note, this position is grant funded.

This position is Monday-Friday; business hours.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with equivalent work experience in computer science, information systems, mathematics, or a related field required. Master's degree with a research focus preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with Linux in an academic research environment.
  • Experience working with SQL servers.
  • Experience working with App development platforms.
  • Expert knowledge of Python and working knowledge of one or more additional high-level programming languages such as C, C++, or Java.
  • Working knowledge of one or more scripting languages such as csh, Bash, or perl.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience using clustered computing servers, and research centric software in high-performance computing settings (i.e., scalable, parallel architectures, plug-in management, and basic aspects of the UNIX operating system).
  • Ability to monitor system usage and performance statistics and to understand the impacts of operating system tuning parameters and knowledge of advanced problem resolution procedures, testing and evaluation methods, programming tools, and system network security.
  • Ability to make technical design decisions involving software or hardware implementation strategies.
  • Ability to assist in transition to AWS/Cloud-based storage and computing environments.
  • Knowledge of advanced data storage technologies and high-speed network interfaces.
  • Ability to assist Faculty and Network Services team in gathering user requirements and planning and designing computer systems.
  • Ability to define proper methods and procedures for the integration, testing, and installation of system modifications.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet firm deadlines when evaluating technical requirements and providing recommendations and solutions.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.

  • A current Linux Certified Red Hat System Administrator (RHCSA) certification not required, but preferred;
  • SQL Server Certification not required, but preferred.
