Job Description:
The Department of Biomolecular Engineering [https://www.soe.ucsc.edu/departments/biomolecular-engineering] at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications from outstanding scientists for the position of Assistant Research Scientist, under the direction of Professor Mark Akeson. We seek a self-motivated, creative scientist interested in genomics and transcriptomics technologies. Specific projects in which the candidate will play a significant role include the following: i) the development of nanopore sequencing technology; ii) the development of nanopore based methods for characterizing epigenetic modifications and modifications to RNA molecules; iii) single cell methods; and iv) novel nanopore based sequencing technologies, using PromethION and MinION.

The incumbent will be expected (i) to provide technical leadership and direction to a small senior-level technology development team, (ii) to work with graduate and undergraduate students, (iii) publish in scientific journals and present findings at scientific meetings, and (iv) be expected to apply for and serve as principal investigator on grants, contracts, and private external funding. The successful candidate will be highly articulate and have demonstrated ability to collaborate with scientists, laboratory scientists, software engineers, and students in developing novel genomics tools, protocols, and resources.

ACADEMIC TITLE: Assistant Research

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related discipline at the time of application; a minimum of one-year experience in preparation and analysis of high MW DNA; a minimum of one-year experience in preparation of intact full-length RNA transcripts; a minimum two-years’ experience in end-to-end execution of nanopore sequencing experiments with experience using multiple platforms; and a minimum two-years’ experience in biological data analysis and programming experience to develop computational systems for genomics and precision medicine

DURATION OF POSITION: Initial appointment will be full‐time through June 30, 2020 with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
