Job Description:
The Data Analysis Scientist serves as a key member of the Genetic Project Team (GPT) working with a team of scientists in the development of analytical tools and data analysis in support of the Global Breeding Product Delivery Teams (GBPDTs). Works with GPT members to pursue novel discovery research, and develop and deploy new molecular breeding strategies in support of cutting edge molecular breeding applications. Serves as a lead in the development of molecular breeding strategies across crops for which this role is critical in Syngenta’s position as a leader in molecular breeding and novel product development. Conducts data analytics for genetics and plant breeding.

Specific duties include:

1) conduct genetic analysis of molecular data (molecular markers, sequence data, and expression data) in support of the GBPDT’s focus on strategic traits in maize product development;

2) apply molecular breeding tools and applications to projects supporting GBPDTs and provide recommendations to improve and automate tools being utilized by product development scientists and other internal stakeholders globally;

3) collaborate and work on projects by conducting experiments that analyze the application of next-generation sequencing data;

4) conduct statistical and bioinformatics analysis of experimental data produced by next generation sequencing;

5) Use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to conduct cloud computing for data analysis and data management in a distributed computing work environment;

6) lead genetic analyses with breeding scientists on large, multi-year training data, such as phenotype, genotype, environmental, and sequence datasets, in maize;

7) produce and maintain automated systematic pipelines for sequencing data;

8) collaborate with Research and Development Information Support (RDIS) and other functions to determine computational data strategies and recommend technology-based solutions needed by the GBPDT;

9) work in global project teams utilizing project management protocols;

10) program in C, C++, Python, R, Perl, and SAS;

11) interpret analytical results for project stakeholders and GBPDTs;

12) enable deployment of Genome Wide Selection (GWS) application strategies within the global teams by developing automation and data requirements for implementation within GBPDTs;

13) develop novel analysis concepts and methods to increase efficiency and speed of analysis, and improve GWS accuracy, implementation, and efficiency;

14) create new genetic analysis methods to utilize next-generation sequence data and evolve big data handling methods in support of maize and other crops molecular breeding goals and corn product development pipeline;

15) utilize Hadoop or another big data platform;

16) sequence handling of maize; and

17) develop strategies and analytical methods to improve genetics and plant breeding analyses. International and domestic travel may be required up to 15% of the time.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Genomics, or related field and 2 years of related experience conducting data analytics for genetics and plant breeding.
  • Must have 12 months of experience with each of the following: Using Amazon Web Services (AWS) to conduct cloud computing for data analysis and data management in a distributed computing work environment; Leading genetic analyses with breeding scientists on large, multi-year training data, such as phenotype, genotype, environmental, and sequence datasets, in maize; Working in global project teams utilizing project management protocols; Programming in C, C++, Python, R, Perl, and SAS; Utilizing Hadoop or another big data platform; Sequencing handling of maize; and, Developing strategies and analytical methods to improve genetics and plant breeding analyses.
  • All experience may have been gained concurrently. Employer will accept experience gained before, during, or after Ph.D. program.
