Job Description:
HJF is seeking a Senior Bioinformaticist to support the Gynecologic Cancer Center of Excellence (GYN-COE) located at the Women’s Health Integrated Research Center in Fairfax, Virginia to contribute to gynecologic cancer biomarker research using advanced computational analysis techniques as applied to high throughput genomics and proteomics data. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to GYN-COE. The candidate will be responsible for working with principal scientists in primary analysis and interpretation of large high throughput genomics and proteomics datasets utilizing multiple computational capabilities, including machine-learning and statistical methods. The candidate will be responsible for developing and utilizing customized data analysis toolkits and procedures for integration of instrument and clinical information, along with development of in-house data processing and cluster analysis computing toolkits, sample size and power analysis, survival rate analysis, and data visualization.

Responsibilities:

-Management and analyses of primary proteomics and genomics data, including transfer, primary analysis and collation.

-Implement novel algorithms and develop customized software and tools to streamline research processes in Windows and UNIX environments using Object-Oriented language and scripting language.

-Integrate corresponding clinical information into data mining and modeling procedures.

-Generate analysis report and visualization figures for publications and grant applications.

-Conducts study design power calculations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must know (through academic training or work experience) data mining algorithms to analyze high-throughput genomics and proteomics data; demonstrated competence in the design, application and interpretation of data from multi-dimensional data-mining algorithms; Experience in clustering and classification methods to facilitate biological data analysis, such as K-means, Hierarchical, Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Classification and regression tree (CART) and Support vector machines (SVM). Familiar with performance evaluation of classification models, logistic regression analysis and survival analysis. Experience and proficient in one of these scripting languages: Perl, Python, Matlab; one of these statistical programming languages: R, SAS, SPSS. Knowledge of next generation sequencing data formats and corresponding bioinformatics analysis tools.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:

Masters in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, or information science.

Physical Capabilities:

Long periods of sitting.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:

May provide guidance to laboratory staff.

Work Environment:

Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazardous materials; may require working evenings and weekends.
