RTI International’s technical and scientific staff conduct health research and provide technical services to improve health in the U.S. and around the globe. We are seeking experienced candidates to support our work to improve the human condition for military populations.

RTI is seeking a Biological Laboratory Technician to provide experimental design and analytical support for clinical and translational research protocols. This position is based within Madigan Army Medical Center (located in Washington state) and through the Regional Health Command – Pacific.

Responsibilities:

Implement current and emerging bioinformatics algorithms for analyzing data, and actively collaborate with the research community to provide information in a comprehensive and understandable manner that supports translational research.

Assist investigators in planning and design of experiments.

Perform raw data analysis, including next generation sequencing or microarray data sets, using the appropriate workflows, algorithms and statistical methods.

Evaluate investigator data using analytical platforms (i.e. GeneSpring software) and publicly available data sets (i.e. GEO, TCGA, HapMap).

-Maintain accurate records and track a large number of samples.

-Interprets analyses and writes statistical sections of study reports.

-Prepare, document and test required programs and procedure data displays in an efficient manner for inclusion in integrated clinical, statistical reports and other similar reports.

-Communicates computational biology principles and concepts to faculty and staff.

-Provides customized bioinformatics and computational support from the project design to publication phases including consulting on experimental design and assisting investigators with submission of manuscripts and/or grant applications.

-Establish and manage an analytical pipeline for data analyses, and generate workflows in scripting languages to automate bioinformatics processes.

-Stay abreast of current and emerging technologies and tools related to the field by interacting with local and external computational biologists, as well as attending scientific conferences and/or workshops related to bioinformatics.

-Provide educational and informational seminars to the Madigan investigator community about bioinformatics and available tools and resources.

Assist investigators in developing an appropriate experimental design, with adequate statistical power.

-Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

-Doctorate or Master’s Degree in Biostatistics, Computational Science, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics or related field

-Minimum of three (3) years of computational biology and statistical analysis, with preference to candidates with at least one (1) year of experience in analysis of high throughput data generated by microarray or other high-volume gene expression data technologies.

-Must be familiar with the problems and bottlenecks associated with genomic-scale data.

-Proficiency in statistical analysis and at least one scripting language (R, Perl, Python, etc.) is required.

-Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.

-Must be self-motivated, have excellent organizational, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the potential to learn new technology, software or scripting languages quickly.

-Must also have the ability to work closely with clinicians and basic researchers to provide customized or guided computational support within a team environment, which includes interfacing with information technology specialists and the research administration staff, while meeting deadlines.
