Job Description:
Applications are invited for the position as leader for the new Center for Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. The leader position is for a four-year period; it may be renewed and is combined with a permanent position as full or associate professor.

The center leader is expected to develop and nurture a dynamic working environment in the center, and in close collaboration with the staff and central collaborators develop an ambitious and dynamic strategy, both for research and for the teaching and service activities. Moreover, as full or associate professor, the successful applicant is expected to have a strong track record of original and high-impact publications in bioinformatics and/or innovative applications of bioinformatics, and be experienced in supervision and teaching.

Specific qualifications:

When evaluating applicants, weight will put on documented experience and qualifications in the following areas:

  • Scientific expertise revealed by a track record of high impact publications especially during the last five years – documenting qualification as full or associated professor.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the leader position; experience in leadership and administration.
  • Documented experience and qualifications in teaching, pedagogics and supervision of PhD and master students.
  • Ability to attract external funding; experience from participation and coordination of larger research projects.
  • Deep knowledge of bioinformatics and broad knowledge of biology and biomedicine.
  • Good relations to academic and clinical research groups within biological and biomedical sciences in Norway.
  • To qualify for appointment the applicant must have completed a PhD in Bioinformatics or a related area. For appointments to professorships the requirement is considerable academic production beyond what is required for a doctoral degree.
It is an advantage to master a Scandinavian language, but this is not a prerequisite. A successful candidate not speaking a Scandinavian language is expected to learn so within two years.

Additional Info:
The center will be established during 2017. It will initially have six permanent scientific positions including the current position, of which four are already filled. Additionally, it will have four adjunct professors, a service staff (mainly externally funded) and about 10 PhD/post doc positions. The center is intended as the hub in a hub-node structure connecting central bioinformatics user environments at UiO, associated hospitals and collaborating research organizations in the Oslo region. It is initially hosted by the Department of Informatics, but will move to the new Life Science building when this is finalized.

The current scientific staff, which is affiliated to the Department of Informatics, works with computational applications in the medical and biological sciences, especially bioinformatics and statistical genomics. Both method development and advanced applications of bioinformatics are covered. The group is involved in many research centres and projects, and collaborates extensively with other research groups within biology and the medical sciences regionally, nationally and internationally. The group also hosts the Elixir bioinformatics service group.

The new center is expected to

  • conduct high quality research within bioinformatics,
  • provide teaching and supervision aimed both at training future professionals in bioinformatics and at qualifying life science students and scientists in applied bioinformatics
  • provide supervision and easy-to-access service to the institution’s biological and biomedical communities.
