Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Specialist is a member of the Bioinformatics & Professional Services group, focusing on support and consultancy for customers generating sequence data on Illumina platforms. The Specialist plays a pivotal role in providing & developing consultative and support services for bioinformatics and data-analysis solutions as part of the Service and Support organization within Illumina’s EMEA commercial team. Reporting to the Bioinformatics & Professional Services Manager, the Bioinformatics Specialist will be responsible for developing, communicating and effectively executing the highest level of commercial support across a broad range of customers across EMEA, including leading sequencing centers and key opinion leaders. The role includes leading in complex client consultation and implementation of tailored projects at customer sites.

Job Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Serving as Bioinformatics subject matter expert for current and prospective commercial customers of Illumina’s portfolio of sequencing platforms - in support of their data processing, analysis and interpretation needs.
  • Playing a role in building our professional services offerings supporting customer bioinformatics and data-analysis requirements. Including, but not limited to, capture of customer requirements, implementation and delivery projects providing tailored analysis solutions to customers.
  • Liaising with customers and internally to ensure customer success and identifying & reporting solutions to problems encountered across the region and globally.
  • Playing a key role in promoting the use of Illumina software and data-solutions and interacting with Sales and development teams to feedback user experience
  • Acting as a subject matter expert in second level of support to in-house support teams.
  • Play an integral role in the development of key group processes that support our mission of building and maintaining our world-class support organization.
  • Author, edit and review technical documentation in conjunction with the Content Operations group.
  • Contribute to developing and delivering training of customers and internal teams in conjunction with the Commercial Training group
  • Act as a clearinghouse for demonstrated best practices in data processing, analysis and interpretation at factory-level/large-scale sequencing installations and advise customers on best practices for successful implementation of high-throughput sequencing data-analysis methods and platforms.
  • Availability for Field travel (up to 30%)
Preferred Educational Background:

PhD, MS, or BS c in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related degree

Preferred Experience:

  • 5+ years of commercial biotech/biomedical science industry experience preferred
  • 3+ years of direct experience with high-throughput NGS and other genomic data analysis; in-depth understanding of NGS analysis tools and algorithms and their implementation on high-performance, scientific compute hardware systems
  • Experience with current sequence-alignment, variant-calling and interpretation tools and concepts. Also data management tools & compute platforms
  • Linux command line familiarity, ideally with experience in a scripting language such as Python.
  • Experience in commercial product development and product launch, preferably of data analysis products and solutions.
  • Highly self-motivated with strong analytical and problem solving ability, excellent presentation, verbal, written communications skills
  • Production bioinformatics or customer support experience preferred
  • Project management experience an advantage
  • Strong ability to work cross-functionally within a global organization and matrix reporting structure
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Clear vision of, and commitment to, providing outstanding customer service
