Job Description:
The Bioinformatics and Omics Data Analytics Group is seeking a Postdoc Bioinformatics

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to perform integrative analysis on large-scale datasets (genome, transcriptome, epigenome, others) which are either already available in our group or which will be generated using state-of-the-art techniques. The successful applicant will work on analysis, integration and visualization of such large omics datasets. The tasks will include both the application of existing as well as the development of new methods.

The research environment will be highly collaborative, with regular interactions with bioinformaticians, cancer biologists, and clinicians. The candidate will work on joint initiatives but will also be responsible for driving own specified projects.

We offer:

• Highly interesting position in an interdisciplinary setting

• Participation in leading national and international research consortia

• Stimulating international research environment

• Broad expertise in computational cancer biology with proven track record of high impact publications

• Excellent computational infrastructure including state-of-the-art computer cluster and petabyte-scale data storage facilities

Position suitable both for starting as well as experienced postdocs.

Your profile:

• PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, data mining, biostatistics, engineering or equivalent

• Good programming skills (e.g. Python, R, C++) and proficiency in Unix-like computing environments

• Experience in the analysis of next generation sequencing data is a strong plus

• Solid knowledge in statistics and / or machine learning is a plus

• Good understanding of molecular and cancer biology is a plus

• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

• Ability to work independently and excellent team working skills

• Organizational skills and ability to supervise students

The position is limited to 2 years.

The position can in principle be part-time.

Additional Info:
The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With approximately 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Bioinformatics and Omics Data Analytics Group at the German Cancer Research Center is developing and applying computational methods for analysis and interpretation of (gen)omics data. Our aim is to identify and understand patterns in large high-dimensional datasets to address questions in molecular oncology and personalized medicine. We perform data analysis and interpretation for several cancer genomics projects within the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and the Heidelberg Center for Personalized Oncology (dkfz-hipo).

Consortia like the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) have generated large genome-wide datasets (whole genome, transcriptome, miRNAome, methylome) for thousands of cancer samples. The analysis of these datasets has allowed tremendous progress in understanding the mutational landscape and pathogenetic mechanisms of the investigated tumor types. However, most of the current analyses relied only on a single data type and made only limited use of the comprehensive molecular characterization of the tumors. Integrative analysis of multiple data types will result in a deeper understanding of cancer-specific deregulations and the crosstalks between genetic and epigenetic components.

For further information please contact Dr. Matthias Schlesner, phone +49 6221 42-2720.

The German Cancer Research Center is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and encourages female applicants to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
