Job Description:
This position will work with a team responsible for deep sequencing data analysis. As part of those responsibilities the candidate will participate in the development of procedures and pipelines for data analysis. These responsibilities also include independently supporting, developing, designing, and executing fundamental research activities for a single or multiple research project(s) and suggesting options for improving quality and recommending solutions. Research efforts will contribute toward publications and presentations. The selected individual will understand the rationale for the research, and will perform related experiments to test research hypotheses. Research duties will include working directly with experimental data sequencing data. The individual will perform various techniques to address scientific questions including analysis, integration, interpretation, and method development for large scale sequencing datasets. In addition, the incumbent will assist with grant and manuscript writing and contributes to research publications, reports and manuscripts. Included among our faculty are 11 clinical faculty, affording students the opportunity to participate in research projects with a direct clinical correlation to veterinary and/or human medicine. Our research faculty are housed in a biomedical Research Building with 104,000 gross sq. ft., which opened in the summer of 2004. Thus, new, state-of-the-art research facilities are available to the research faculty in the department. Included in the new Research Building is a transgenic mouse facility, permitting the opportunity for graduate students to participate in research projects related to mouse and animal genomics. A number of graduate programs are available to students interested in working with faculty in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program in CVM consists of several different “tracks”, allowing students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which departmental faculty are affiliated include programs in immunology, physiology, and functional genomics. The Peng Lab uses systems approaches to better understand pathogen-host-microbiome interactions and microbial pathogenesis. The goal is to uncover underlying molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis and to identify targets of intervention as well as biomarkers for clinical applications. We focus on computational analysis of high-throughput omics data combined with experimental validation. The Lab is housed in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Research Building located at the NC State Biomedical Centennial Campus, and is part of NC State Bioinformatics Research Center. - Must have graduate degree in bioinformatics, bioengineering, or related field and relevant research experience
- Prior relevant research experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organization skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines, goal oriented and high level of motivation
- Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with deep sequencing data analysis software and data analysis
- Programming using Perl, R, C, Matlab, or Java
- Excellent science writing skills. Must be able to significantly contribute to grant and manuscript writing.
- More in depth knowledge and experience with deep sequencing data analysis related to infectious diseases and immunology.
- Research experience with complex immune genes.
- Demonstrated experience in publishing research findings in peer reviewed journals
- PhD in Bioinformatics or similar quantitative fields
