Job Description:
The incumbent will play a lead role in the development of an open innovation research platform for the development of advanced cell factories. This position will act as the SCRUM master for the software development team at UCSD and act as the primary technical interface with other international sections. The incumbent will also work closely with subject matter experts in the Systems Biology Research Group (SBRG). The platform to be developed exists of biological & mathematical model reconstruction, prediction of biotransformation routes, experimental data management, and big data analytics. The incumbent will write high-quality software, use skills as an advanced specialized bioinformatics programming professional with an in-depth understanding of computational algorithms to identify and resolve a wide range of highly complex issues/ software bugs where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. This incumbent will also develop documentation, create comprehensive tests for the platform and lead or mentor a team of bioinformatics and other programming professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • 10+ years of experience in the architecture, design, and development of large-scale applications.
  • Experience and self-motivated developer capable of writing high quality and high performing software.
  • Excellent understanding of full life-cycle software development with Agile methodologies.
  • Expert level skills in a number of these areas: Data modeling, relational database design, development of public, documented REST APIs.
  • Knowledge of developing computational applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
  • Advanced understanding of relational databases, web interfaces and operating systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.
  • Experience with web application architecture, with experience scaling to complex applications with highly-polished user experiences.
  • Experience developing and testing large applications with continuous integration.
  • Experience deploying scalable applications, considering caching, security, containers, and cloud deployment.
  • Excellent project leadership and management skills.
  • Extensive experience with the development of genome-scale model reconstruction.
  • Extensive experience with the development of laboratory information management system.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.
