Job Description Exploratory Statistics and Bioinformatics is a part of the Data and Statistical Sciences (DSS) organization in AbbVie R&D. The group provides statistical and bioinformatics expertise globally for various groups in drug discovery and development sciences, and for biomarker studies in early to late stage clinical trials. Examples of applications/topics supported include in-vitro screening, in-vivo pharmacology, genomics (high thoroughput mRNA expression arrays, CGH arrays, next generation sequencing, microRNA, genotype data, etc.), proteomics, imaging, and other biomarker data generated from pre-clinical and clinical studies, research and GLP assays used for measuring biomarkers, pharmacokinetics and immunogenicity response in preclinical and clinical studies, ADMET screening assays, and preclinical pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD). We have an exciting opportunity for a senior level statistician (grade level and position title commensurate with experience) reporting to the Global Head, Exploratory Statistics, which can based in North Chicago, IL or Worcester, MA. Primary Function: Provide statistical consulting and computing support for projects in drug discovery, preclinical and clinical biomarker research (genomics, imaging, etc.), and for biomarker, PK and immunogenicity assays used in preclinical and clinical studies. May supervise/mentor junior staff in the North Chicago corporate headquarters, depending on candidate's experience. Key Responsibilities: Statistical and Bioinformatics collaborations and consultations on some or all of the following applications: High Throughput Screening (HTS), In-Vitro and In-Vivo pharmacology assays and studies,Genomics (high throughput gene expression arrays, CGH arrays, next generation sequencing, microRNA, etc.), Proteomics, Imaging, and biomarker data generated from preclinical and clinical studies, Assays used for biomarkers, pharmacokinetics and immunogenicity evaluations in preclinical and clinical studies, Design of biomarker-based clinical trials for personalized therapies, and general methodological research on related topics. Develop and maintain good working relationships with statisticians, clinical and discovery scientists, and personnel from other areas within the company and also with scientists from external institutions when communicating/collaborating on various projects. Maintain and develop further expertise in the use of R, SAS, UNIX utilities, JAVA, Perl, JMP, VB and other programs, and continue development of such utilities/macros to improve process flow, as well as maintaining appropriate documentation Consult/collaborate with other statisticians on various statistical methodologies and statistical computing applications. Proactively seek input and review from other experts within and outside the group on various projects and research activities, and share technical information when appropriate. Propose opportunities for productivity improvements and implementation plans May mentor junior staff in North Chicago corporate headquarters, provide technical guidance on their projects, and proactively contribute to their technical and career developmentQualifications: Position will be hired based on experience. Basic: 3-15 years of related experience with demonstrated skills/accomplishments. Grade level and title will be commensurate with experience. Ph.D. in statistics, bioinformatics and related disciplines, with some coursework/experience in biochemistry, genetics, and related subjects Expertise in statistical methodologies such as predictive modeling, machine learning methods, nonlinear regression, mixed effects models, multivariate analysis, robust statistics, adaptive designs, etc. Relevant academic/industry experience on topics related to drug discovery, genomics and other applications mentioned above. Strong computing skills in R, SAS and other programming languages Preferred: Familiarity in web-based tool development, JAVA, Perl, Visual Basic, etc. Background in bioinformatics, computational biology, biochemistry, and related subjects Key Leadership Competencies: Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of team to enable higher performance Learns fast, grasps the 'essence' and can change the course quickly where indicated Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo Creates a learning environment, opens to suggestions and experimentation for improvement Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality
