Job Specifications Location: Minneapolis, MN - Broadway Place East Employment Status: InternPosition Title: Bioinformatics Scientist - Data Standards Programming Intern # of openings: 1Position Summary: The Bioinformatics Scientist - Data Standards Programming Intern is responsible for assisting in developing successful technical solutions for the Bioinformatics Research Department of the NMDP. This includes responsibilities (with supervision) of collecting, analyzing, reviewing, documenting, and communicating business needs between NMDP Bioinformatics Research partners and Bioinformatics Research staff. This also includes responsibility of providing enterprise applications development and coding changes to existing applications as specified. Minimum Education: At least two programming-language classes at the undergraduate level, with one of them Java. Perl as an alternate is highly desired. Classes that concentrate on Service-Oriented Architecture are also highly desired. As this is the Bioinformatics Research Department, class work or work experience with molecular biology-related fields is needed. Minimum Experience: Previous bioinformatics work experience or at least one class in a Web or Internet development environment, including RESTful web services and XML development. Key Knowledge: Basic knowledge of the development life cycle including testing process and methods, variable programming fundamentals, conditional execution, data structures, compilation and debugging tools. Understanding of Service-Oriented Architecture using RESTful web services. Understanding of bioinformatics workflows using private and public resources. Ability to work effectively with supervision, a self-starter, self-motivated team player able to work in a fast paced dynamic environment. Attention to detail with a quality focus. Possess and demonstrate strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills. Being self-directed and able to work effectively independently or within project teams is key. Strong communication skills, asking questions without hesitation when needed, and keeping the group up-to-date with their activities.
