Job Description:
Working independently, the incumbent identifies relevant research objectives and questions and conducts subsequent bioinformatics analyses of data from a wide variety of projects, including analysis of genetic variation, DNA methylation, gene expression, metabolomics and proteomics data. Guides staff members in using adequate bioinformatics tools and provides them with start-up directions and work-plans for further data analysis.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and assesses research objectives; designs and develops work plans to accomplish research goals
  • Independently develops and deploys tools and methodologies for the analysis of a broad range of genomics data.
  • In collaboration with faculty and other researchers, develops/acquires scripts and software to analyze and display data.
  • Independently performs a wide variety of non-standard complex bioinformatics analyses, including use of advanced programming tools such as R, Matlab, and perl.
  • Follows the evolution of new software developments, data analysis tools, the latest analysis algorithms from larger genomics community and statistical analysis projects. Implements and develops changes to the processes to ensure they remain up-to-date
  • Investigates information resources, follows the bioinformatics literature that is relevant to the incoming projects, and identifies optimal data sources.
  • Prepares presentations of analysis results for use in research findings and presentations
  • Independently documents research results (Figures, Tables, Methods and Descriptions) in preparation of publication and documents produced.
  • Identifies emerging software to enhance Laboratory productivity and efficiency.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education: Master's Degree in related field

Experience:

  • Ph.D. in biology or related field an advantage.
  • Experience in bioinformatics data analysis and database management
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent programming skills (i.e. scripting such as Perl or Python, statistics such as Matlab or R, mySQL or similar).
  • Ability to multi-task and self-prioritize work.
  • Extensive computer skills, covering a large variety of bioinformatics applications (i.e. tools for processing of large datasets through database systems).
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
  • Work is 100% is computer based.
  • May require extended and varying work hours to meet demands.
