Job Description:
We are seeking a bioinformatics or computing scientist to research and develop new approaches to integrating and mining information about drugs and their targets, as part of an exciting new European Union funded project, REPOTRIAL. This is a highly multidisciplinary project involving computing scientists, molecular biologists and clinicians from both academia and industry across Europe. Your role will be to work closely with the Newcastle and Munich teams to research and develop novel software systems that will dynamically integrate data. These systems will use a federated approach, to integrate data from a variety of different databases to form a knowledgebase that can be used to indicate opportunities for drug repurposing. You will also be involved in the development of an ontology based data model to support semantic data integration. Novel algorithms will be developed to highlight opportunities for drug repurposing and a Web application will be produced that will allow the Clinicians on the project to browse and query the data appropriately. You will have a PhD awarded or nearing completion in bioinformatics or computing science. Experience in data management, modelling and semantic data integration are also essential. Experience in data modelling using ontologies is also required. Experience with bioinformatics software development is also highly desirable. Also required is experience in the development of interactive Web systems and human interface design. Experience in systems biology, drug development, clinical trials and bioinformatics workflows are also highly desirable. You will need strong programming and systems administration skills using Linux. Skills in using RDF, graph databases and handling large datasets are also essential. You will also need strong communication skills to interact effectively with scientists from other disciplines in the project. You will need to be able to travel to different groups in Europe to present your work and collaborate with other groups. This is an interdisciplinary post that involves research at the interface of computing, molecular biology and medicine. You will join one of the largest and most successful academic bioinformatics groups in the country based in the School of Computing. We have recently moved to tailor-made facilities in the new Urban Sciences Building, providing an exciting environment for interactive interdisciplinary research. This post is available fixed term for 36 months.
