RESPONSIBILITIES: The Plant Biology Division of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. is seeking applicants for the position of Bioinformatics Research Analyst. The Foundation has state-of- the-art research facilities including high-performance bioinformatics computing facilities, modern laboratories, greenhouse, and office areas. Research related to this position will be conducted in the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology laboratory of Dr. Patrick Zhao. The incumbent will be responsible for working collaboratively with other personnel in establishing the Alfalfa Breeder's Toolbox which will be a source of breeder-friendly tools that integrates basic and applied knowledge about perennial forage legume alfalfa (Medicago sativa). The successful applicant will focus on the development of the toolbox system platform and innovative approaches to analyze and mine large-scale "omics" data for the analysis of alfalfa genome, alfalfa gene annotation, integration of genome sequences with molecular markers, linkage maps, gene expression and phenotypic data for target traits, and integration of alfalfa resources with other relevant legume databases. Other duties will include but are not limited to conducting research in computational biology and bioinformatics theory and method, and applying them for both basic scientific discovery and advancement of applied science. The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for the design and implementation of bioinformatics tools and systems, data analysis and interpretation and report data and results to PI and to assist in publishing results in peer-reviewed journals. The preferred incumbent should be able to communication clearly and be able to work independently and in a team environment to solve problems and will be able to efficiently use the Linux operation system with programming knowledge in languages such as Java, Perl and SQL using MySQL or MariaDB. This Bioinformatics Research Analyst position is funded through an internal research initiative - the Noble Foundation Forage365 research initiative, which aims to provide a sustainable, year-round grazing system. Funding for this position will be available in January 2015. Funding is anticipated to be renewed annually based upon performance and funding availability, and is scheduled to end on or before December 31, 2017. REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree in related scientific fields, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, computer sciences, electronic and computer engineering, genomics or plant biology, with 2 years of bioinformatics experience required. PhD in related field along with knowledge in one or more areas: integration and mining of large-scale "omics" data, genome-wide association study (GWAS), plant genome and gene annotation, gene regulatory networks, is preferred. Also preferred is experience in developing large-scale data analysis system, web servers and web-based databases.
