The Administrative Division of the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. is seeking applicants for the position of Alfalfa Breeder's Toolbox Scientific Programmer. The successful applicant will be responsible for implementing the database framework and user interface needed to develop a comprehensive alfalfa breeder’s toolbox that integrates genome sequences with molecular markers, linkage maps, gene expression and phenotypic data for target traits. This position will collaborate with researchers, breeders and other computer scientists to ensure the developed system supports the goals of the project.
This Alfalfa Breeder's Toolbox Scientific Programmer position is funded through an internal granting program. The Noble Foundation’s Forage365 research initiative aims to provide a sustainable, year-round grazing system. Funding for this position will be available in January 2015. Funding is anticipated to be renewed annually based upon performance and funding availability and is scheduled to end on or before December 31, 2017. However, there may be a possibility for future funding past this date if the project produces positive outcomes and with approval of additional funds.

2 years experience in scientific software and large scale database system design and implementation required
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Broad knowledge of industry software development standards and practices
• Experience with development in a Linux environment
• Ability to solve problems independently yet function well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
• Experience with relational databases, preferably MySQL
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Experience with developing scientific systems in a web environment
• Experience with at least one of the following programming languages: Java, Perl, PHP or Python
• Basic knowledge of molecular biology, genomics, genetics and transcriptomics concepts and techniques
