Job Summary:

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track administrative faculty position as chair of the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science and Technology to begin July 1, 2015. The chair is the executive officer of the department and reports to and advises the dean of the College of Science and Technology regarding the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and direction in shared governance in areas of goal-setting and assessment, faculty recruitment, hiring, mentoring and tenure/promotion evaluation
Provides leadership and guidance to advance the research capabilities and scholarly activities of the department
Ensures that academic programs in the department maintain high standards
Directs the administration of the department
Serves on the College Executive Committee and the College Curriculum Committee and other university or college committees when appropriate
Oversees custody and authorized use of university property charged to the department and the assignment of space and facilities to authorized activities in accordance with university policy and regulations
Performs other duties as requested by the dean and/or upper administration

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in any area of biological sciences or closely related field from an accredited university, with a minimum of 18 hours of graduate coursework in biological sciences
Professional credentials sufficient to be considered eligible for appointment as full professor

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior administrative experience; leadership skills; ability to organize multidisciplinary projects; experience with graduate and undergraduate programs

The College of Science and Technology is one of six degree-granting colleges with more than 180 faculty educating approximately 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students. External funding for the college is approximately $33 million. The college includes the Schools of Computing, Construction, Criminal Justice and Polymers and High Performance Materials; the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Coastal Sciences, Geography and Geology, Human Capital Development, Marine Science, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy; the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory; the Center for Science and Mathematics Education; and the Office of Premedical and Health Professions. The Department of Biological Sciences (www.usm.edu/biological-sciences) is a multidisciplinary department, with faculty and students located at teaching sites in Hattiesburg and Long Beach. The department offers undergraduate degrees in biological sciences (several emphasis areas) and in marine biology, and the MS and PhD in biological sciences. The department currently comprises 35 full-time faculty, three staff, and approximately 800 undergraduates and 70 graduate students. Faculty have active research programs in ecology and in cellular, molecular and organismal biology.
