Job Description:

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic software developer to join the Ensembl Regulation Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

Ensembl Regulation is developing and maintaining a comprehensive map of gene expression regulation, focused on human and mouse. The team collects and processes public epigenomic datasets, such as histone marks, transcription factor binding, DNA methylation, or chromatin accessibility, and converts them into a functional annotation, highlighting features such as promoters, enhancers or insulators and keeping track of changes between cell types. The team also maintains an expressive API that allows users to conveniently query this high dimensional database.

The software developer will work on a Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation project which is jointly held between EMBL-EBI, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and Glaxo Smith Kline. Their primary responsibilities will be:

• Processing most of the epigenomic datasets (-Chip-Seq, DNAsel hypersensitivity etc), produced by the CTTV and integrating them into the Ensembl Regulatory Build, which is one of the most comprehensive maps of regulatory elements in the human genome.
• Serve as the liaison between the Ensembl and CTTV projects and regularly report on their work and scientific results to the different collaborators.
• Maintain and develop the codebase of the Ensembl Epigenomic Pipeline, and Ensembl in general, in collaboration with the rest of the project developers.

EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.

The successful candidate will hold a Masters' degree or PhD in molecular biology, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or any related field. Whilst no prior experience is required, professional experience in team software development would be highly advantageous as would experience of working in large scientific consortia, especially in the field of genomics. Direct experience with epigenomics or biostatistics would be highly desirable.

The post-holder will have extensive experience with computer usage and must be fully fluent with the Unix command line, Perl and MySQL. Knowledge of Git or C would be beneficial.

The post-holder must be team orientated, ready to contribute to Ensembl's 40+ development team and will be expected to work in step with the procedures and time constraints of the entire project. (S)he must also be thorough, timely and detail-orientated in their work as it will require keeping track of many parallel tasks. Excellent communication, both written and verbal, is essential as are excellent interpersonal skills.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.

Applications are welcomed from all Nationalities. Visa information will be discussed in more detail with those selected for interview.

Please note applications will close at midnight German time on the date listed above.
