We are looking for an experienced computational biologist / bioinformatician with strong background in the large-scale analysis of genome & epigenome data and keen interest in molecular medicine. The position is based at the joint NGS technology platform of CeMM & the Medical University of Vienna.
The Institute [http://www.cemm.at]
The CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine is an international and interdisciplinary research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Driven by medical needs, CeMM integrates basic research and clinical expertise to pursue innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches focused on cancer, inflammation and immune disorders. CeMM is located in a new building at the center of Vienna’s Medical University campus, within walking distance of Vienna’s historical city center. According to a study by “The Scientist”, CeMM is among the top-5 best places to work in academia world-wide (http://the-scientist.com/2012/08/01/best-places-to-work-academia-2012). Vienna is frequently ranked the world’s best city to live. It is a United Nations city with a large English-speaking community. The official language at CeMM is English, as more than 30 differ-ent nationalities are represented.
The Biomedical Sequencing Facility [http://biomedical-sequencing.at]
The BSF is Austria’s first and leading technology platform dedicated to next-generation sequencing in biomedicine (http://biomedical-sequencing.at). It is jointly operated by the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and by the Medical University of Vienna. The BSF is equipped with the latest technology for large-scale genome research, including next generation sequencers (Illumina HiSeq technology), 96-well robotic platforms for automated library preparation, a microfluidic system for single-cell analysis, and a powerful scientific computing cluster. The BSF’s mandate includes a strong focus on technology development, contribution to study design and bioinformatic data analysis, as well as training and teaching best practices in high-throughput genomics. Under the leadership of Christoph Bock (who is a bioinformatician and epigenome scientist), the BSF contributes to various national and international research projects, including the International Human Epigenome Consortium (http://www.ihec-epigenomes.org) and the European BLUEPRINT epigenome project (http://blueprint-epigenome.eu).
Associated Labs at CeMM
The BSF works together with many researchers at CeMM, at the Medical University of Vienna and at other institutions in Austria and internationally. Particularly strong ties exist with three genomics labs at CeMM, which are physically co-located with the BSF:
- The Cancer Genomics lab (PI: Robert Kralovics, http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=-oTaCR8AAAAJ) studies the genomic basis of chronic and acute hematological malignancies (http://www.cemm.oeaw.ac.at/index.php?id=33).
- The Pediatric Immunogenomics lab (PI: Kaan Boztug, http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=d-AVNMAAAAAJ) studies the genetics and genomics of primary immundeficiencies, congenital bone marrow failure syndromes and malignant disorders of childhood (http://www.cemm.oeaw.ac.at/index.php?id=186).
- The Medical Epigenomics lab (PI: Christoph Bock, http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=9qSsTcIAAAAJ) studies the epigenome’s role in cancer, utilizing experimental as well as computational methods (http://medical-epigenomics.org/).
The Candidate
As part of our growing team, we are looking for highly motivated candidates with strong interest in contributing to the genomics revolution in biomedicine. The ideal candidate has an excellent track record in bioinformatics or a related field (typically including a PhD and/or postdoctoral experience, although outstanding Master-level applications will also be considered) and is looking for a longer term job perspective that includes software development and maintenance of high-throughput pipelines, data analysis service and collaborative research projects. For those candidates who would like to use this position as a stepping stone toward obtaining a faculty position at an internationally competitive university or research institute, we will provide the freedom to pursue and publish methodological and/or biomedical research of the highest quality. The exact job description, responsibilities and salary will be commensurable with experience. All candidates should have prior work experience in world-class institutions. Finally, given that CeMM works in highly competitive areas at the forefront of biomedical research, intellectual curiosity, diligence, flexibility and dedication to science are key success factors.
