Job Description:

The Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research provides support for MSU faculty on computational issues in research and teaching. This position will be responsible for helping MSU researchers with developing, maintaining & modifying large scale scientific software packages as well as conducting research.

This Research Specialist will be responsible for conducting bioinformatics analysis as part of the BiCEP bioinformatics service core. Additional job duties will include generating quotes for service and outreach to potential clients, and support for iCER research specialists, for maintaining software packages, maintenance of Galaxy webserver, support of research proposals by MSU faculty, and individual research. Candidates are expected to be familiar with current state-of-the-art software and workflows for bioinformatics research. Examples include: RNAseq (GATK, DESeq), Variant Analysis, statistical analysis of data®, genome assembly, pathway analysis. Expected to participate in improvement of galaxy pipelines, and other mechanisms for automation of standard analysis processes, to enable end-point use of analysis. Where applicable, research specialist will collaborate with other researchers at MSU. Will carry out a modest basic scientific effort in the area of large-scale scientific software development. Must be able to research technology developments and measure impact on existing standards and application architectures.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications – A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, or other relevant field with demonstrated experience in Bioinformatics required. Examples include bioinformatics, computational biology, computational chemistry or computational materials science; though candidates with strong software development skills in other areas of the computational sciences will be given strong consideration. Desired Qualifications: Scholarly experience in an academic research environment as well as experience with proposal development and coordination. Experience in bioinformatics pipeline development. Familiarity with interacting with multiple projects and faculty with the purpose of supporting research. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and teamwork experience. Knowledge of applicable academic standards for the conduct of sponsored research and creative activity. Knowledge of research techniques and/or methodologies, including quantitative methods or project evaluation protocols, applicable cross one or more major scholarly domains.
