Job Description:
POSITION:
The group of Matthias Kaschube at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) in Frankfurt, Germany, is seeking a highly motivated doctoral student who will analyze the dynamics of cell shapes changes and cell contacts during tissue morphogenesis. This is for a newly funded joint project with the experimental group of Christian Pohl at the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences in Frankfurt and is part of the ‘DFG Research Unit: Functional dynamics of cell contacts in cellular assemblies and migratory cells’. The project is based on EDGE4D, a recently introduced tool for quantifying cell and tissue morphology (https://sites.google.com/site/edge4dsupplement/home), and involves its extension and application to analyze apical constriction during mouth formation in C. elegans. The position is available immediately for up to three years.
LAB ENVIRONMENT:
The work will be carried out primarily at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), a research institution dedicated to fundamental theoretical research in various areas of science. FIAS hosts state-of-the-art facilities and has tight links to the Goethe University, the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics and the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences. Interaction with the other groups of the DFG Research Unit (see http://for1756.uni-goettingen.de/index.html for more details) will be appreciated. The city of Frankfurt is the hub of one of the most vibrant metropolitan areas in Europe and boasts a rich cultural community. For further information, please visit http://fias.uni-frankfurt.de/neuro/kaschube/
QUALIFICATIONS:
Important selection criteria include strong programming and mathematical skills and past research accomplishments. Applicants must have received training in a relevant quantitative discipline, e.g. computer science, physics, engineering. Previous experience with developmental biology is advantageous but not essential.
