Job Description:
Summary:

Located in Newark, NJ, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine within the Laboratory for Stem Cell and Translational Medicine. The role will apply deep sequencing and bioinformatics approaches in human adult stem cells to predict and validate molecular factors that regulate cellular senescence and aging. The research area targeting cellular aging as a therapeutic is rapidly expanding and becoming increasingly competitive. The Laboratory for Stem Cell and Translational Medicine at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is a leader in adult stem cell research. This opportunity offers an exceptional learning environment to apply principles of stem cell biology to discover novel cellular and molecular therapies. It is anticipated that, through daily interaction with faculty, staff, physician-scientists and collaborators within the biotechnology sector, the incumbent will gain appreciation for the drug discovery process.
Technical Skill Requirements:
- Demonstrated skills in deep sequencing experimental design, particularly ChIP-seq and RNA-seq, as well as experience mining large biological datasets.
- Application of bioinformatics to interpret RNA-seq datasets using target prediction algorithms and software. A familiarity with Ingenuity Pathway Analysis to model, analyze and understand sequencing data in the context of cellular physiology is highly desired.
- Experience in techniques relevant to adult stem cell biology, such as maintenance and expansion of cells, flow cytometry, cell-based bioassays and multiplex ELISA.
- Experience in skills relevant to molecular biology, such as quantitative PCR, transient and stable transfections, molecular cloning and DNA microarray analysis.
- Ideal candidates will have some background in epigenetics, microRNA and exosome biology, as well as experience with animal models.
- Ability to independently analyze literature and project data.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.

Responsibilities:
The post-doctoral fellow will work directly on a project requiring interaction with a developing biotechnology company. The incumbent will conduct experiments and analyze data together with both university faculty/staff and company scientists, under direct supervision of the laboratory’s principal investigator. As part of your studies, you will be directly responsible for designing deep sequencing experiments and analyzing RNA-seq data to identify putative therapeutic factors. The fellow is also expected to perform target prediction and validation of the sequencing data using both computational and cellular models, respectively. Additionally, you will be expected to develop a proficiency in current drug development and regulatory guidelines supporting both molecular and cellular therapeutics through a continuous survey and review of the existing literature.

Other Attributes:
- Must be capable of working independently.
- Ability to work proactively required.
- Must have strong organizational skills and an ability to follow regulatory best lab practices with regard to data handling.
- Must have a high degree of self-motivation fueled by a fundamental interest in contributing to science and drug discovery in particular.
Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is committed to equal opportunity in the terms and conditions of employment for all employees and job applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity or gender expression, national origin, disability or veteran status.
