Job Description:
Scientific Programmer - EMBL-EBIProtein Data BankCambridgeshire, UK-Nr Hinxton-Wellcome Trust Genome Campus We are seeking to recruit an experienced Scientific Programmer to work on the incorporation of small-angle scattering (SAS) data into the wwPDB Deposition and Annotation system and on dissemination of SAS data through the PDBe website. The project will involve extensive collaboration with the wwPDB partners, members of the wwPDB SAS Task Force and the wider community and is based at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe; pdbe.org) is a world-leader in archival and dissemination of 3D biomacromolecular structure data. Together with our international partners, PDBe accepts and curates depositions of structural data for the two global 3D structure archives, PDB and EMDB. PDBe also maintains advanced search services for structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists and IT specialists).

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. We are part of EMBL, Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences.&nbsp The successful applicant will have a background in computer science, (structural) bioinformatics or structural biology and working experience in software engineering or scientific programming in an academic or industrial setting. Excellent programming skills in Python are an absolute requirement for this position. Experience with the Django framework and/or JavaScript would be a distinct advantage. Affinity with or knowledge of structural biology (in particular SAS methods), structural bioinformatics, modern statistical methods, other programming (e.g., C) or scripting languages, and relational databases (e.g., Oracle) would be advantageous as well.

The successful applicant is an enthusiastic and self-motivated person, with excellent communication (reflected in the cover letter), reporting and inter-personal skills. The successful candidate will work with a team of software developers, database experts and scientific domain experts and report to the Project Leader NMR in the PDBe team. This is an opportunity for the right person to make a significant contribution to the improvement of the coverage and quality of the PDB archive and to help make small-angle scattering data accessible beyond the community of experts.
