Job Description:
The group of systems biology at IBM focuses on the development of new methodological approaches for the analysis and exploitation of last generation biomedical technologies. In the context of cancer, the group is actively involved in the development of new computational approaches for the reconstruction of molecular networks and from the integration of different types of data with the goal of building comprehensive disease models. In addition, the group has also access to the latest instance of Watson cognitive computer, a last generation computation developed at IBM that can analyze large amounts of structured and unstructured information in order to understand and create new hypothesis. At present, Watson is being trained in the field of oncology to support clinicians in taking evidence-based decisions and identifying personalized patient treatments.
Prof. Aebersold’s group has invented the proteomic method SWATH-MS that allows fast mass spectrometric conversion of small amounts of tissue (biopsy level) into a single, permanent digital file representing the quantitative proteome of the sample. The method provides high throughput, highly reproducible and sensitive digital records of all peptides detectable by mass spectrometry. Data is subsequently analyzed with OpenSWATH, a cross-platform software that identifies and quantifies the proteomic signals in the SWATH datasets with statistical confidence.
The successful candidate will develop new algorithms to reconstruct protein networks from SWATH-MS proteomic profiles. Candidates should have a strong background in computer science, mathematics or physics and be interested in cancer-related research. Strong programming skills are necessary. Experience in machine learning, big data analysis, and high performance computing would be a plus. Previous experience in proteomics would be helpful but not essential.
Interested candidates, please send an application including CV and reference letters to: Dr. Maria
Rodriguez Martinez <mrm@zurich.ibm.com>.
Keywords: Protein networks, Machine Learning, Statistical inference, Proteomics.
