The Research Scientist I, Biomarker Sciences, is an entry level position, for an independent scientific thinker with the ability to develop biomarker research concepts and translate into clinical applicable assays. He/she will support Biomarker Leads’ need to develop and execute assays that support the biomarker strategy for research and development projects across multiple therapeutic areas. He/she will contribute to biomarker discovery work and will be responsible for assay development, design, characterization and implementation in clinical studies. The Research Scientist will be accountable for a portion of or the entire biomarker strategy, oversee technical aspects of biomarker assays and advise Research and Clinical Project Teams on next steps. He/she will also evaluate the clinical applicability, validation status and any scientific, technical or statistical issues related to biomarker assay implementation. The Research Scientist will be a point of contact providing help and expert scientific advice related to biomarker sample collection, storage and sample and data analysis to Biomarker leads for implementation into clinical studies.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
-Responsible for designing portions of or entire biomarker strategy for multiple projects in collaboration with Research and Clinical team members.
-Advise teams on strategy for pharmacodynamics, predictive, disease monitoring, prognostic and other biomarkers
-Select relevant biomarker assay platforms and oversee testing by clinical teams by providing technical and tactical input
-Assist project teams with biomarker strategy and data analysis related to disease indication selection and in preclinical animal models
-Manage the development and validation of clinically applicable biomarker assays and may seek external service laboratories for specialized assay development
- Deliver key project data and interpretation in formal settings including project team meetings
-Collaborate with Biomarker Biostatistics and Bioinformatics groups on data analysis
-Participate hands-on in the lab to facilitate and assist with biomarker assay development, testing and/or validation
-Collaborate with Biomarker Lead Scientists and Clinical Operations by providing biomarker requirements to Clinical Operations for sample collection, handling and analysis for clinical studies
-Review and contribute to biomarker sections of clinical protocols, lab manuals, and clinical study reports as needed
-Oversight of one or more research associates may be required
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
-PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or related discipline
-Demonstrated experience of innovative research in biology with proven achievements in a pharmaceutical, biotech, or academic environment.
- Must think critically and creatively, be able to work independently, determine appropriate resources for resolution of problems, and apply an advanced level of understanding of project goals and methods
-Must have biomarker expertise in one or more of the following therapeutic areas: inflammation, immunology, autoimmune disease, fibrosis, respiratory disease, or oncology
