This individual will conduct research and development activities targeted towards the culture-free identification and characterization of known and unknown pathogens in clinical samples using next-generation sequencing, data analysis, and bioinformatics.

Applies integrated technical judgment--which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses--to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.

Studies the chemical composition or physical principles of living cells and organisms, their electrical and mechanical energy, and related phenomena. Studies the growth, structure, development, and general characteristics of microorganisms. Isolates and makes cultures of microorganisms to identify them and to observe their action upon living tissues and organic matter. Makes chemical analysis of substances such as acids, alcohol, and enzymes. Studies the origin, relationship, development, anatomy, functions, and chemical processes of a living organism. Analyzes materials to determine their toxic or nontoxic properties, binding, and efficacy. Examines and conducts research on chemical aspects of cells and cell division.
