Job Description:
The Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE-JGI, a division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) has an exciting opportunity available for a postdoctoral fellow. Under general supervision of the principal investigator, perform research relevant to the missions of the DOE Joint Genome Institute. Work as part of a team including biologists, bioinformaticians, and computer scientists, develop novel data analysis algorithms and apply them to mine massive sequence data sets. Present research progress and receive feedback to a group of world-class scientists. Publish scientific manuscripts describing results. Job Duties
Essential
Apply cutting-edge analysis methods to analyze terabase-scale sequence data derived from large genome, transcriptome and metagenome sequencing projects
In collaboration with academic and industry leaders, develop novel data analysis algorithms
Prepare research results for publication and for presentations at scientific meetings
Marginal
Provide ad-hoc general analytical support to the Genome Technology group.
Qualifications
Essential
Recent PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, or in related disciplines with training/experience in machine learning
Proven skills in algorithm development.
Knowledge in microbial genomics and metagenomics.
Knowledge in high performance computing, cloud computing, and data-intensive computing is a plus
A commitment to and demonstrated ability to perform collaborative research in an interdisciplinary team environment.
Notes
This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA. Job may require occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work.
