Job Description:
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
Joins the Broad Technology Labs and the MIT-Broad Synthetic Biology Foundry with a focus on new DNA synthesis and assembly technology, applied genomics, next generation sequencing methods development. Will provide molecular biology expertise and direction to multi-disciplinary teams developing synthetic biology methods that include microfluidics, robotic automation, bioinformatics, proteomics, and screening. Primary effort will be at the bench and candidate will be required to independently design, execute, and perform initial computational analysis on molecular biology experiments. The work will be in support of a fast-paced team effort with milestone deliverables where strong organizational and experimental resource management skills will be required. In addition, as a member of the Technology Labs, works with Broad faculty, scientists, and staff in designing, implementing, and improving novel methods for synthetic biology, to elucidate cell regulation and function, and to understand molecular disease mechanisms.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
Independently designs and conducts research to develop novel molecular biology methods in accordance with Technology Labs goals; collaborates with other Labs members to identify novel methods needs and develops projects and plans to develop these methods;
Works independently at the bench to design and execute research projects; plans, schedules, or coordinates the development of novel genomic assay methods. Ensures that critical project requirements, timelines and deliverables are met.
Responsible for the specification, implementation and validation of assays for high-throughput cell function assays, synthetic DNA design, and DNA construction.
Works with high throughput sequencing, bio-automation, informatics, and microfluidics staff at all levels to develop and implement novel methods.
Works with bio-informatics groups to develop novel computational methods to in support of advanced lab methods and to develop novel analysis algorithms.
Determines the feasibility and makes recommendations regarding the acquisition and/or implementation of new technologies, reagents and assay procedures.
Uses demonstrated scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities.
Regularly presents data at meetings, participates in external activities, and technical meetings.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May supervise several exempt staff members. Where appropriate, depending on the needs of the project, may supervise scientists, post-docs or technicians, provide major input to staffing of project teams, and mentor/train staff.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in molecular biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or bioengineering. Background in synthetic biology, genomics, molecular biology, or biochemistry strongly preferred.
Demonstrated professional experience in the development and utilization of next generation sequencing, nucleic acid assays and/or cell-based assays.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with internal and external investigators in a fast paced environment required.
Should possess excellent communication and scientific writing skills and ability to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to handle a variety of tasks, effectively solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and shift priorities rapidly.
Extensive knowledge of bioinformatics tools and methods required, and experience with large data sets and analysis of next generation sequencing data a plus.
Knowledge of SAS, JMP, UNIX, SQL, Excel, and other Database applications.
