Post summary

CONNECT is a new SFI Research Centre. It is co-funded by the Irish government, through SFI, and by industry. The centre focuses on future networks and communications – including fixed and wireless networks and the Internet-of-Things. CONNECT places special emphasis on the use of national testbeds to differentiate our work. CONNECT builds on the work of CTVR (www.ctvr.ie) which is now under its umbrella.

These 12 positions will be under the direction an academic member of staff at Trinity College Dublin, University of Dublin; Prof. Luiz DaSilva, Prof. Linda Doyle, Dr. Nicola Marchetti or Dr. Marco Ruffini.

Details

A significant amount of our research is conducted in collaboration with the CONNECT industry partners Hence we are looking for applicants who are interested in engaging in challenging research projects that will have industrial impact.  These projects are typically more agile in nature and will have defined goals, objectives and timelines. All candidates will be expected to interact with our industrial partners in a professional manner. A number of the posts will involve Researcher in Residence placements with our partner companies may be offered to advance learning and collaboration. All candidates will be expected to generate high quality publications and contribute to potential IP discovery.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field in the area of communications and/or networking. An established track record of publication in leading journals and/or conferences, in the area of communications and/or networking. Solid written and oral communications skills; The ability to work well in a group, and the ability to mentor junior researchers, such as Ph.D. students. 

The 24-month contract for these positions will be renewable for up to three years. 

The posts will involve research projects in one or more of the following areas:

Cognitive/Software Radio Cognitive Networking Internet-of-Things – all layers 5G  - all layers LTE- all flavours Dynamic Resource Management Network Virtualisation Optical Networking Software Defined Networking

A number of the projects will call for hands on prototyping. Hence software design for telecoms applications, networks, and components (e.g., control plane, protocol implementation, PHY/MAC, higher layers, software defined radio) is essential for these posts as well as hands-on prototyping experience (e.g. hackathons, amateur radio etc.)

The relevant CONNECT industry partners for these posts include: Alcatel Lucent, Benetel, ESB, Google, Huawei, Intel, RCNx, Real Wireless, UTRC among others.
