Job Description:
USRA is an independent, nonprofit research corporation where the combined efforts of in-house talent and university-based expertise merge to advance space science and technology. USRA works across disciplines including bio medicine, planetary science, astrophysics, and engineering and integrates those competencies into applications ranging from fundamental research to facility management and operations. USRA engages the creativity and authoritative expertise of the research community to develop and deliver sophisticated, forward-looking solutions to Federal agencies and other customers - on schedule and within budget.
USRA is seeking a full-time Visiting Scientist for the RIACS program located in Mountainview,CA. Under the lead of RIACS Director, the Visiting Scientist performs tasks contributing to USRA and NASA missions. The Visiting Scientist will work conduct research in astrobiology, technology and flight missions using synthetic biology as an enabling tool. The Visiting Scientist is responsible for developing research programs and executing them in these general areas. This will include hands on laboratory work, bioinformatics and mentoring students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for developing programs in astrobiology, technology and flight missions using synthetic biology as an enabling tool
Responsible for grant writing, data analysis, interpretation and reports.
Responsible for developing experimental research in a field aligned with astrobiology and synthetic biology.
Required Skills
Ph.D. With background in microbiology, synthetic biology and mechanisms of radiation resistance
Minimum 3 years postdoctoral experience
Three or more professional publications
Experience in field work and student mentoring
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
